Surprising the guest

As if you were in your house

Each and everyone remembers 101 Park House.  For many, this hotel is like a ‘second home’, for others, it is simply the best hotel in the world.  For Aureliano Garcia, a Mexican, that for work reasons needs to frequent Colombia, the 101 Park House is simply the best hotel in the world.


This hotel is crazy about service of the highest level and the ‘wow’ experience that one receives when they arrive at this cosy place to which I call ‘my house in Colombia’, she indicates.

“I returned to Colombia” she adds, “after three years of absence, and they surprised me with something so simple that it really made an impact on me.  In the airport, a familiar face greeted me.  It was my friend Don Mario who always picks me up and takes me throughout Bogota.  But this time not only was Don Mario ready for my exit from the airport, but he had also brought me my favorite soft drink, a Colombiana, a typical drink from this country, well chilled for the walk.  “What a most pleasant surprise! This is something that they only do there” relates Garcia, who warns that a better hotel than the 101 Park does not exist a better hotel in Colombia.

On the other hand, Carolina Ayran, who has not been a proper guest of the hotel but rather an ex-employee of the 101 says that she feels nostalgia toward the hotel from a far.  “I worked there and often I helped to make sure that the moments of our guests were unforgettable and for those who visited us and although we tried to surprise, the message for the guest is to say the happy thing that is nice for us both, and for them to return.  I miss the 101” she affirmed with nostalgia while also adding “I love to know that the house of many guests is also my house”, indicates Ayran.

On the other hand, a person who’s blog on the internet is identified as ‘Glenda” says that although she has not personally stayed in the hotel, she has various friends who have done so and one of her comments says that  “Our friends at 101 Park House are always present in my conferences and in my presentations to assist and are a clear example of the great madness that the hotel exhibits towards providing excellent service to their clients and hopefully one day I am able to meet them during a visit to Bogota, she stresses.

Rodolfo Padovani, a Spainard who visits Colombia on and off is united to this series of commentaries.  “I come often to the hotel because I have a pair of Brazilian friends that stayed at the hotel and what I really see in the attention and in the service is the warmth of a home.  They make the guest and their friends feel as if they were in their own house.  I live in apartment but if the company would tell me that I must live in a hotel, with my eyes closed, I would come here and in I know many hotels in Bogota but there is no point of comparison, he noted.

Meanwhile Geovani Cuir, a Colombian Executive of a petroleum company that was transferred from the USA to Colombia spent three weeks in the hotel while looking for an apartment.  I had felt like I was in my home, it is very familiar and the people are very friendly.  I don’t think that another hotel with these characteristics exists in Colombia, he said.


Speak where you go!

A Mexican gentleman who always stays at 101 Park House had difficulties one time arriving to the hotel.  Even so, convinced that the ‘101 family’ was waiting for him, he called the hotel and notified them that he was not able to stay there.


So the boys…and girls of 101 Park did not doubt in calling to the other hotel to say that he they were one of this client’s VIP and asked them if they would decorate his room.  So, they agreed and when the guest arrived, he found a sign that said: Welcome to 101 Park House!  This is your house!  The Mexican was simply not able to believe it.

Another Mexican that was also a diligent client of the 101 Park Hotel and who loved Colombian soda, was surprised one day, right in the airport.  One of the 101 employees greeted him with a chilled Colombiana, his favorite Colombian soda.

With a view of the sea

One day, a person called 101 Park House to make a reservation.  From the beginning he emphatically insisted that he have a room with ‘a view of the sea’ in this capital city hotel.  It read, 2,600 meters closer to the stars.  The guest insisted that he wanted a view of the sea.  Even in several emails that he sent before arriving to Bogota, he remembered the hotel that from his room he could gaze at a sea of his dreams.  The receptionist never told him no to his request.  On the contrary, she told the team of 101 Park and for his arrival, mounted to the window of the room a big poster of a blue sea, a shining sun and a single beach with palm trees.  Upon arrival to the room, he told them, “there is the sea”.  The surprise could not do more than


Cause the tourist to collapse in his fluffy bed and thank the ingenuity that just changed his day.

On another occasion, a guest that lived for more than one year in the hotel and who repeated over and over again that his room was The Hacienda Dávila surprised himself when one day upon arriving in his room he found a big sign that said “Welcome to the Hacienda Dávila”.  When entering the room, he almost died to find a special decoration with goats, cows, trees….a hacienda in the heart of the city

In one of her trips to Colombia, Celia Cruz, the celebrity stayed at 101.  Some days after her arrival to the country, the singer said in an interview that what she liked most about her visit to Colombia was having a good ajiaco and enjoying the company of her best friend, Matlide Diaz..


In that then, Maria Josefina Lengua, the acting Manager of Sales of the hotel, searched at all costs for Matilde Diaz and planned with her a surprise for the Cuban Salsera.

When arriving, Celia told someone that the welcome lunch was the responsibikity fo the hotel”  When she arrived at the restaurant “la guarachera” became perplexed and became astonished when she saw her best friend waiting for her with a flavorful  Colombian ajiaco.


Simply Spectacular!

For a man like Fabian Olah, Elecrtic Engineer of multinational Juniper Networks, to speak about innovative technologies, high performance network solutions and solid, intelligent, adaptable networks, it is easy and fun.  This is his job.


Nevertheless, if there is something that impresses and stirs this residence of Miami, he refers to 101 Park Hose, of which he describes without doubt ‘the best hotel in the world’.

He is correct to do this.  This is the place where they treat him as the best guest, the best table companion, the most friendly, the most fun, the man without a flaw all of the time.  This is just how 101 treats each and every one of its visitors.

The loving and respectful relation is mutual and Olah speaks of the same form of love of this place that he receives uninterrupted for more than two years until someone from here stole him away, his girlfriend, who today is his wife.

He, that had more than 15 years traveling through all of America and who spent three quarters of his life in hotels, does not exaggerate in his qualification of 101 Park House.

“The value of this hotel is the service, for this he believes it is the best hotel in the world.  It is a spectacular hotel and the best thing is that I do not know how they remember to arrange every detail for the client so well; they are such lovers of detail to the point of fear”…it is incredible, says Olah.

And to tattoo in the memory of whomever, by chance, reads this, this Engineer displays his most pleasing memory and relates that in a certain occasion he brought a friend to the bar of the hotel.  “That person sat down and requested a whiskey with a single ice cube.  Six months later, he returned on his own and while Edgar, the Maite, hoped it would me,  he brought him a whiskey and said to him ‘here is your drink and with a single ice cube’”

“It’s that”, says Olah, “the service is truly personalized.  Here they arrange everything with personalized attention.  One feels as if they are in their home and each room is like their personal apartment.”

There is no doubt, Fabian Olah loves this hotel very much because it has been a part of his life.  He lived in the hotel for two years and now he that is just married, he has rediscovered 101 as a place to take his fiancé.  To celebrate the wedding day, they decided to spend the night of their Honeymoon in one of the best suites.

Like him, there is a handful of clients who share similar stories and they are now like brothers.  They work during the day and then meet up in the evening in the Bar or on the terrace to speak a bit about everything.  “It was a pity that I had to leave the hotel to live in an apartment. I did it because I am now a married man. But even so, I still recognize this as my second home, nothing similar to those cold hotels that I have known when I am outside of Colombia”


Warmth of the home, but with Room Service

For the majority, it is may be a place of passing, a place to rest, even for a fleeting pleasing moment, nevertheless, for Mauricio Olveira, a Brazilian high executive of Telefónica Telecom, simply stated, 101 Park House is his home.


Yes, for this 37 years old Brazilian Executive of a multi-national company, married with two children of whom he misses dearly during his cold nights in Bogotá, it has been three years that his address of residence is a hotel room number, his suite, the lobby of the hotel and his Associates that arrive at his “house” which are really the 90 employees of the hotel.

Since February of 2007, the date he began his stay at 101 Park House, which was supposedly for just one week, soon extended to a stay of more than 3 years thus converting the hotel into his true home.

As a result, it is normal to hear from the chambermaid, the bellman, the receptionist, as well as management when he leaves his room, 303, “Good Day Mr. Oliveira, Shall we serve you your breakfast, as always? “Your team missed you yesterday”,  “Why did you arrive so late”, “how was your meeting?”  He is truly a part of the hotel’s family. 

“To live in a hotel is somewhat cold and impersonal” I have had the chance to know various ones in the world, but 101 Park is definitely special in how they deliver the highest service to their guests.  I miss my house, my family, my hearth, but here they have given me a feeling as if it were my own house.  It’s even more he added, with a smile, in my house I have a vigilant woman that looks out for me and here I have more than 15 that look after me”

Oliveira is considered by the hotel to be more of a privileged guest than a client.  “Basically, they spoil me a lot at 101.  I am not able to arrive late because they call me to see if I am okay.  They are always worried about me and if I am in a bad mood, they ask me what happened.  The truth is that they are very special, from the Porter to the General Manager” he warns it’s a Spanish tangled web.

Oliveira says that he arrived at 101 Park House through references.  “I lasted four days in an un-named hotel in Bogotá that resembled a house of dogs, where everyone told me ‘no’ and here everyone tells me ‘yes’.

Although this executive is aware that it would be more economical to live in an apartment, what he really wants, besides the elegance and comfort, is to feel like he is part of a family, away from his family.

His love for the hotel has arrived to the point that besides from leaving the hotel with some employees to party, he has also asked some of them to join him in his kitchen to prepare one of his favorite dishes, Brazilian Frijolada accompanied by a Capriña. “They leave drunk” he said jokingly.

Nevertheless, he warns that his seasoning does not win the appeal of Jorge, the Chef who surprises him every now and then with Ajiaco, Mondongo or some other exquisite Colombian plate. “yes, that food has driven me crazy.”

In his business affairs, he does not exclude his wife and his children.  They vacation with him in Colombia and they return directly to 101 Park House to receive the same VIP treatment as Mauricio.

“What I like about here is that they treat me in a familiar manner, but with professionalism and respect.  When my wife arrives, the bed is covered with rose petals and her room, which is an apartment, shines quite romantic with a welcome on the signboard that they have in the lobby”

But for Mauricio, the best place at 101 Park House is the Bar.  “Unitl I arrive there, later I take a bath and I am not always going there in search of a drink.  Generally, I look to watch a game, speak to the waiters, the receptionist….to be with my ‘101 family’”
